The Mahoney and McIntire properties are located in western Marion between Route 6 and I-195 and comprise about 360 acres in one of the largest undeveloped land blocks draining into Aucoot Cove.
This property supports a rich diversity of habitats including upland pine, mixed hardwood forest, shrub and wooded swamp, and freshwater marsh. Included in the wildlife are several rare and threatened species such as Eastern Box Turtles and Four-toed Salamanders. The land is contiguous with hundreds of acres of SLT, municipal and state conservation lands – providing an amazing wildlife corridor for recreation.
The Mahoney and McIntire lands are a vital component of our broader and ongoing land conservation goals. This land is crucial because it protects core habitat and our watershed, as well as allowing for public hiking and walking trails.

- It is the largest land parcel in Aucoot Woods at about 360 acres;
- It preserves ancient walking trails, bike path frontage, and allows for the creation of new trails;
- It is “core habitat” as identified by Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program (the highest priority for biodiversity conservation in the state) for species such as Four-toed Salamanders and Eastern Box Turtles;
- It is identified on the Massachusetts Statewide Land Conservation Plan as important undeveloped land needing protection; and
- It preserves water quality in Aucoot Cove by limiting development on land that drains into the Cove.
