Sippican Lands Trust Earns National Recognition
Accreditation Awarded by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission
(MARION, MA) – The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, announced last night that Sippican Lands Trust has been awarded accredited status.
“Accredited land trusts meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever,” said Commission Executive Director Tammara Van Ryn. “The accreditation seal lets the public know that the accredited land trust has undergone an extensive, external review of the governance and management of its organization and the systems and policies it uses to protect land.”
"Sippican Lands Trust’s accredited status demonstrates our commitment to permanent land conservation," says Jessica Whittaker, Executive Director. “Our land trust is a stronger organization today having gone through the rigorous accreditation program.”
Sippican Lands Trust was founded in 1974 to preserve open space for the inhabitants of the Town of Marion and currently protects about 1200 acres. The ultimate goal of the Trust is to protect wildlife and natural resources as well as history, heritage and beauty of the area.
Land is America’s most important and valuable resource. Conserving our land helps ensure clean air and drinking water, food security, scenic landscapes and views, recreational places, and habitat for the diversity of life on earth. Across the country, local citizens and communities have come together to form land trusts to save the places they love. Community leaders in land trusts across the country have worked with willing landowners to save over 37 million acres of farms, forests, parks and places people care about. Strong, well-managed land trusts provide local communities with effective champions and caretakers of their critical land resources, and safeguard the land through the generations.
39 land trusts were awarded accreditation at a special ceremony at Rally: The National Land Conservation Conference in Pittsburgh, PA in September. Rally, hosted by The Land Trust Alliance, is the largest gathering of land conservationists in the country. Accredited land trusts are able to display a seal indicating to the public that they meet national standards for excellence, uphold the public trust and ensure that conservation efforts are permanent. The seal is a mark of distinction in land conservation.
“We are proud to display the accreditation seal as it demonstrates to our donors, members, and community that we take our ethical responsibility of running our land trust very seriously,” said Board President Chris Bryant. To learn more about Sippican Lands Trust and our preserves, please visit our website at www.sippicanlandstrust.org.
About The Land Trust Accreditation Commission

The Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance established in 2006, is governed by a volunteer board of diverse land conservation and nonprofit management experts from around the country. The Untouchable Tree is about our connection to the magnificence, the transcendence, and the essential nature of trees. Throughout human history, they have served as shelter and as symbol. And today, more than ever, our destiny is tied to theirs.
In this book you'll find discussion of our exploitation of trees for material gain and declarations of our age-old love for woodlands, parks, and forests; reflections on a tree's life cycle; and the historical origins of various species. Sometimes soothing, sometimes haunting, his words and art reveal the many sides of trees with a vibrancy sure to leave a powerful impression long after the book is closed.
The Untouchable Tree is 192 pages and is illustrated with 30 color paintings. It will retail for $29.95, but will be available for a limited time to SLT supporters for $20.00. Please support both SLT and one of our local artists. For more information on Peter's work, visit Peter Stone Studios.

238 ACRES CONSERVED IN THE AUCOOT COVE WATERSHED! SLT wishes to thank Dennis Mahoney & Sons for the donation of a 238 acre Conservation Restriction on the Marion / Mattapoisett town line. This CR will protect habitat for four toed salamanders and eastern box turtles; both species are currently protected under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act.
SLT hopes to continue our conservation efforts in this fragile watershed.
KENNEY'S LANDING SLT continues to work with the Town of Marion on a Conservation Restriction on two lots at the end of Ichabod Lane abutting our Ladner's Landing property. This acquisition will provide access to the Sippican River for kayaks and canoes. When this project is complete we intend to officially rename the preserve, including the Ladner's Landing property, "Kenney's Landing" in honor of Hod Kenney!
TERRAPINS IN SIPPICAN HARBOR Tabor Academy, the New Bedford Oceanarium, Mass Audubon, Llyod Center, the Buttonwood Park Zoo and other regional environmental groups engaged in a joint research project to assess the status of diamondback terrapins in estuaries from Wareham to Fall River this coming summer. These non-migratory marine turtles are a key bellwether species within our fragile coastal ecosystem. Recent preliminary data suggest that terrapins in Sippican Harbor may be on the verge of extinction. How You Can Help: You can support this project and help save these animals from extinction. When you are out walking on SLT lands and you see a terrapin please call the 24/7 hotline at (508) 274-5108 with sightings, especially during the nesting season from early June to late July as female terrapins come up on the shoreline to lay eggs. Other turtle calls are welcomed too, as they will get a sense of the diversity of populations and species within the South Coast region. Check out the poster [Adobe PDF-64KB].
A recent report by Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation recommends dismantling tax deductions for landowners who volunteer to conserve their land - a program that has been essential to private and public conservation efforts. For more information on this issue please visit the Land Trust Alliance's website.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED The Sippican Lands Trust welcomes volunteers and can use help both in the office for event coordination, filing, etc., as well as help on land in terms of Stewardship.
